Sanford Maine
Sanford
Maine was originally part of an areaof land purchased by William
Phillips, in 1661, from Abenaki Chiefs Fluellin and Rogomock.
Phillips was a local businessperson who owned sawmills in Biddeford
and Saco.
Sanford was originalled named Phillipstown until it incorporated,
in 1768.
At the time
of its incorporation, Phillipstown was renamed Sanford after
Peleg Sanford, who later inherited the parcel of land, originally
owned by Phillips, in 1696.
Despite
the fact that 12 sawmills operated in Sanford Maine during the
early 19th Century, the economy was primarily agricultural.
In the late 1860's, Thomas Goodall founded Goodall Mills, to
manufacture carriage robes and blankets. Goodall Mills expanded,
over the years, to manufacture a variety of other textiles,
until closing in 1954.
